Year 2K Compatibility and PC Cards
- Hardware.
This paper relates to Second Processor Cards for use in Acorn Risc PCs
- Software.
This paper relates to software supplied by Aleph One Ltd. for use with the above Cards. Discs of such software always bear an Aleph One label which says !PC Software or !PCPro Software.
- Clock. The hardware contains no clock, and no memory which persists after the host computer is turned off or the PC Card is removed.
- Date and Time for PC applications are taken from the host Acorn computer, each time the PCCard is started or reset. Acorn computers are fully Y2K-Compliant, as indicated on Acorn's Web site:
http://www.acorn.com/acorn/news/year2000
- From Release Version 2.13 of !PCPro onwards, the date taken by the Second Processor from the host Acorn computer includes the Century as well as the Year, Month and Day. Earlier versions of !PCPro before 2.04 did not read the Century, but only Year, Month and Day.
- Given the complete transfer of necessary Date information to the Second Processor Card using !PCPro 2.13 and later, we are confident that any PC application capable of handling Century information, as well as Year, Month and Day, will be Y2K-compliant when running on a Second Processor Card, to the extent permitted by that application. We are in no way responsible for those applications or for their Y2K compatibility. Our responsibility ends with providing all the date information the application needs, in the format CC YY MM DD, which is standard for PC applications.
- This does not apply to Podule PC Cards, built for Archimedes A40x and
A5000 computers. If this presents a problem to you please let us know as
soon as possible.
- Upgrades to !PCPro version 2.13 software are obtainable free, by
returning an original disc, bearing our label, to us in Bottisham with a
request for upgrading. We appreciate a stamp and return label to facilitate
our reply; overseas customers can send two International Reply Coupons.
The latest version of !PCPro, version 3, is available to all at a price of
£70 to fresh users and £40 to those returning a PCPro disc with an
Aleph One label. Prices include tax and postage. PCPro 3 has a number of
valuable and convenient features described on
http://www.aleph1.co.uk/AcornProd/Software/PCPro3Demo/index.html
We are not aware that other PC Card support software has this conformity.
Microsoft and other producers software may not read the century date
that is available and they also have their own millennium statement.
