ARMLinux for Psion PDAs |
Psion make a very nice range of PDAs - the series 5, 5mx, 5mxPro, Series 7 and NetBook. The apparent similarities between these devices conceal important hardware differences which mean that for the purposes of ARMLinux support they can be split into 3 groups:
The Linux 7110 project managed to get some relevant information from Psion, and full info on the CL7110, (and guessed a few things), a couple of years back and succeeded in porting Linux to the Series 5, largely independently of the other ARM ports going on. (Read the HOWTO for how to do this - as PDF or as HTML)
However for all of 2000 we only managed to get information on the Series 7, and that only under an NDA that prevents discolsure to 3rd parties, and thus any effective porting effort. But in February 2001 Peter van Sebille managed to get Series 5mx information released. This is still somewhat restricted (we can't put it up on a Website), but it is sufficiently open that work could proceed. A basic kernel port was done in 14 days, largely by Tony Lindgren, and work continues apace. The project website is at PsiLinux group.
So, we expect to be able to release a Psion distribution in 2001 based on this porting work and the work of other groups like Emdebian, Familiar Linux and Pocket Linux, which should make for some marvellous Linux PDAs. Watch ths space...
