Aleph ARMLinux - A modern Debian-based ARMLinux release on 3CDs with manual.

ARMLinux installation service, and Hard Disc and RISC OS upgrades with ARMLinux pre-installed - Avoid having to re-format drives and install ARMLinux youself - and take the opportunity to upgrade to RISC OS 4 with a new-format disc. We now have available a release of Debian 2.2 compiled for ARM processors. It comprises three CD ROMs, a floppy, and a printed User Guide, and the 3 CDs include MANY applications. The User Guide describes how to install it, provides advice on how to start using Linux, and contains the URLs of many useful sites including those which serve as an index to the applications on the CDs.

This distribution will be updated from time to time to increase the functionality, and range of included software and to improve the ease of installation. The range of software included is huge. Not everything that exists yet works perfectly on ARM, but most of it does, so there is a large software base available. Applications for editing, word processing, web browsing, emailing, web servers, printing, pdf and postscript reading, graphics manipulation, generating photo albums, lots of languages, desktops, development tools, compilers and debuggers, loads of documentation, cryptography, games of both speed and strategy, mp3 players etc. You can spend a long time investigating the choice available.

For future releases we are working on compiling Open Office for ARMLinux, to provide a full office suite compatible with files from Microsoft Office.

This initial release is intended primarily for installation to an ADFS IDE drive. Check the compatibility page for details of what you need/don't need in your system. This information changes quite quickly but we will try to keep the page up to date for the current release. We are actively working on expanding the set of supported hardware.

We offer for sale multi-GByte hard discs with an ARMLinux installation you can easily start up, and also space under RISC OS for you to put your existing files. We can also install ARMLinux on your existing machine.

Because RISC OS 4 requires reformatting your hard disc it makes sense to have a RISC OS 4 Upgrade together with the reformatting needed to make the best use of it. Here, you can send us your hard disc and we will send it back with another hard disc bearing
(A) the original contents under RISC OS 4 format (so you can use long file names and other features) and also
(B) a partition with a Linux installation on it and instructions on how to get going with it.

Aleph One also provides:

• Competent technical support and help, either from a Premium Rate telephone number or bought with the CD.
• Good documentation and a source of books for further study.
• Applications on the CD. While many of them will also be available free of charge if you download them from the WWW, they may amount to hundreds of MB, so the download time is long, guidance on their use will not be included, and they will not be set up with Risc PCs in mind.
