ARMLinux - the book

ARMLinux is good, but it is new enough that documentation is poor in many areas. We are producing a series of 'Guide to ARMLinux' books, to tell you what you need to know. The books are published in different editions for different platforms. A suitable edition is supplied with all Aleph One distributions or installations in both paper and electronic form. You can also purchase the book alone. There are now two editions available:

Guide to ARMLinux for Developers

This book is for developers and includes extensive documentation on embedded linux fundamentals, the toolchain, cross compilers, moving from other CPUs to ARM, and explicitly covers setting up the LART (SA1100) and Intel Assabet (SA1110) development systems, and the Psion5 PDA (ARM7 core), as well as useful basic GNU/Linux info for those new to GNU/Linux.

The book is available for GBP37 (~EU 58, USD 48) from us. Order Online.

See the contents list.

Forthcoming 2nd. Edition, covering Kernel porting

An expanded and updated book is currently in preparation. As well as general updating to keep up with this fast-changing field, it also includes some new chapters covering often-asked-about topics. These include one describing the process and practicalities of porting the ARMLinux kernel to a new architecture, including a discussion of symbols and macros and the layout and purpose of relevant kernel source files, as well as how to submit your work to the main tree. A second major adition is a description of the available bootloaders for ARM devices and the process of booting the kernel should you need to write or modify a bootloader for this purpose.

The current (prerelease) version of the book is available in electronic form (1.3MB PDF file) for GBP15 (~EU 23, USD 21) from us. Order Online.

If you buy the prerelease you will receive a PDF of the final version when it is published, free of charge.

The book describes how to install ARMLinux, how to boot it, and get started with it, hardware incompatibities you might meet, the partitioning and loader tools, various GNU/Linux fundamentals, other ARMLinux hardware, sources of further help, an editing guide, and further reading.
