What is biofeedback? - Who uses it?

Search

Biofeedback is used in many hospitals around the UK. The Stress Management instruments are most often found in Psychology Departments (but also in Speech and Language Therapy departments), and the EMG instruments in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy Departments.  Practitioners in many professions find themselves dealing with people who are under stress and also use biofeedback equipment and techniques with them.

Because Biofeedback instruments just provide information, and do not change you, they are very safe.

You can buy and use Biofeedback instruments yourself. You can use our products at home. In general all the training you need is to read the Instructions that we provide. We can usually help you with any problems which arise after that, by telephone or email.

What does Aleph One supply?

Different instruments feed back signals about different aspects. The best-seller is the RELAXOMETER, which give a tone whose pitch rises and falls with changes in the level of arousal of the user. While most people are well aware when they are tense, some find it hard to know what to do to relax; the falling tone is a prompt and clear indicator that they are relaxing.

Many years of experience show that almost anyone can use the Relaxometer to become more relaxed. If they learn this in a relaxing situation, they can use the skill in more taxing situations. These instruments are widely used in stress management and in the control of high blood pressure.

Electro-Myo-Graphic (EMG) Instruments are used in the rehabilitation of physically handicapped people. A muscle may seem to be paralysed, but in fact be active only at a very low level. Feeding back that low level of activity allows the user to begin to control, and then to increase, that activity. This type of apparatus can also be used to relax a muscle that has got 'stuck' in a tense and painful state.

Other instruments help control of blood flow, to control migraine, and control of brain electrical activity.
